(The Church and the Park)

The canton of Zarcero, before Alfaro Ruiz is number eleven in the province of Alajuela. It limits to the north with the canton of San Carlos, south to the canton of Naranjo, east to the canton of Valverde Vega and west by the canton of San Ramón. It was founded on June 15, 1915 with the name "Alfaro Ruiz" in honor of Juan Alfaro Ruiz, hero of the National Campaign 1856-1857. He was born in Alajuela in 1910 and died in Liberia in 1856.

During pre-Columbian times the territory of the canton of Zarcero, was inhabited by indigenous of the Huetar Western Kingdom and in the beginnings of the conquest, it was dominated by chief Garabito.

The first settler who came to the region in 1854 was José Zumbado, along with his wife Mercedes Solis. Three years later arrived Yanuario Cubillo with his family, both of San José. Next came the brothers Ramón and Adriano Blanco, residents of San Vicente de Moravia, and Judas Rojas, Feliciano Acuña, José María Murillo Brenes and Gordiano Murillo.

In 1886 the school territorial division of the Republic was established, which made Zarcero a school district of the seventh canton Naranjo. The first school building was built in 1914 in the first administration of Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno; subsequently it was named Otilio Ulate Blanco School. The Zarcero Institute started its educational activity in 1969, in the government of José Joaquín Trejos Fernández.

In 1892 a small chapel was built on the square of the current Zarcero Church. By 1895, the parish of Zarcero was raised, being named San Rafael Archangel as patron saint. The first potable water pipeline was installed in 1910, in the first government of Cleto González Víquez.

In the administration of Alfredo González Flores on June 21, 1915, in Law No. 27, it was awarded the title of town to the population of Zarcero, head of the canton created at that time. Subsequently, on July 24, 1918, in the government of Federico Tinoco Granados, Law No. 28, which gave the villa, the status of city status by decree.

The January 1, 1916 was held the first session of the Zarcero Council, composed of council owners, Francisco Alvarado Segura, President, Antonio González Rodríguez Soto and Nicanor Arguedas. The town clerk was Jesus Quirós and the political leader or chief of police Ignacio Rojas Blanco.

In 1964, the municipality of the canton of Alfaro Ruiz commissions Mr. Evangelista Blanco Brenes the maintenance of the green areas of the park opposite the church. On his own initiative, Mr. Evangelista begins to give various forms of cypress trees, slowly creating the emblematic figures that distinguish this park.

As of June 16, 2010, the name of the canton of Alfaro Ruiz becomes of "Zarcero", giving the name of its main city and making it widely known nationally and internationally. This was achieved by a discussed and approved law in the National Asembly.

The church of San Rafael located in Zarcero, canton of Zarcero, Alajuela, was founded in 1910 and was recently restored by local artists, both within and outside its structure. This church is part of the Francisco Alvarado Park and remains active today, with regular masses. This religious center, is a jewel of this area due to its aesthetic value, for its history, for being a part made by national authors, for the details hidden in each of its corners, for the care with which the painting works have been performed, which generate that surround sensation and three-dimensional, or for the color of light that bathes the attendees of the Mass, when it cross the light stained glass windows of the church. El cantón de Zarcero, antes Alfaro Ruiz, es el número once de la provincia de Alajuela, en la República de Costa Rica. Limita al norte con el cantón de San Carlos, al sur con el cantón de Naranjo, al este con el cantón de Valverde Vega y al oeste con el cantón de San Ramón. Fue fundado el 15 de junio de 1915 con el nombre de «Alfaro Ruiz», en honor a Juan Alfaro Ruiz, héroe de la Campaña Nacional de 1856-1857.

Durante la época precolombina el territorio del cantón de Zarcero, estuvo habitado por indígenas del Reino Huetar de Occidente, en los inicios de la conquista fue dominio del cacique Garabito.

El primer colono que llegó a la región lo hizo en 1854, se trató de José Zumbado, junto con su esposa Mercedes Solís; tres años después llegó Yanuario Cubillo con su familia, ambos de San José. Después vendrían los hermanos Ramón y Adriano Blanco, vecinos de San Vicente de Moravia, así como Judas Rojas, Feliciano Acuña, José María Brenes y Gordiano Murillo.

En 1886 se estableció la división territorial escolar de la República, en la cual Zarcero constituyó el distrito escolar sétimo del cantón de Naranjo. El primer edificio escolar se construyó en 1914, en la primera administración de Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno; posteriormente se bautizó con el nombre de Escuela Otilio Ulate Blanco. El Instituto Zarcero inició sus actividades docentes en 1969, en el gobierno de José Joaquín Trejos Fernández.

En 1892 se construyó un pequeño oratorio, en la plaza de la actual Iglesia de Zarcero. Para el año 1895, se erige la parroquia de Zarcero, siendo nombrado San Rafael Arcángel como santo patrono. La primera cañería se instaló en 1910, en el primer gobierno de Cleto González Víquez.

En la administración de Alfredo González Flores, el 21 de junio de 1915, en Ley No. 27, se le otorgó el título de villa a la población de Zarcero, cabecera del cantón creado en esa oportunidad. Posteriormente, el 24 de julio de 1918, en el gobierno de Federico Tinoco Granados, se decretó la Ley No. 28, que le confirió a la villa, la categoría de ciudad.

El 1 de enero de 1916 se llevó a cabo la primera sesión del Concejo de Zarcero, integrado por los regidores propietarios, señores Francisco Alvarado Segura, Presidente; Antonio Rodríguez Soto y Nicanor González Arguedas. El secretario municipal fue don Jesús Quirós y el jefe político don Ignacio Rojas Blanco.

En 1964, la municipalidad del cantón de Alfaro Ruiz comisiona a don Evangelista Blanco Brenes el mantenimiento de las áreas verdes del parque frente a la iglesia. Por iniciativa propia, don Evangelista comienza a darles diversas formas a los árboles de ciprés, creando poco a poco las emblemáticas figuras que distinguen a este parque.

A partir del 16 de junio del 2010, el nombre del cantón de Alfaro Ruiz pasa a ser el de «Zarcero», dándole así el nombre de su cabecera y por el que es ampliamente conocido a nivel nacional e internacional, esto se logra gracias a una ley discutida y aprobada en la Asamblea Legislativa.

La iglesia de San Rafael en Zarcero ubicada en el Cantón de Zarcero, Alajuela, fue fundada en el año 1910 y fue restaurada recientemente por artistas locales, tanto dentro como fuera de su estructura. Esta iglesia forma parte del parque Francisco Alvarado y se mantiene activa al día de hoy, con misas regulares. Este centro religioso, es una joya de esta zona debido a su valor estético, por su historia, por ser una pieza integra de autores nacionales, por los detalles que esconde en cada una de sus esquinas, el cuidado con el que se han realizado los trabajos de pintura, que generan esa sensación envolvente y tridimensional, o por el color luz que baña a los asistentes de la misa, al cruzar la luz por los vitrales de la iglesia. El Parque Francisco Alvarado de Zarcero cuenta con 100 figuras hechas con cipreses. Esta magnífica y bella obra es producto del Sr. Evangelista Blanco Brenes. En 1964 la Municipalidad de Zarcero le encomendó el mantenimiento del Parque. Por iniciativa propia decidió darle formas a los cipreses y hoy día se tiene una bella obra visitada y fotografiada por nacionales y extranjeros.
A don Evangelista le fue otorgado el Premio de Cultura Popular Tradicional 2014, como un justo y merecido reconocimiento a más de 50 años de ardua labor.
(Francisco Alvarado Zarcero Park has 100 figures made of cypress. This magnificent and beautiful work is the result of Mr. Evangelista Blanco Brenes labor. In 1964 the Municipality of Zarcero entrusted the maintenance of the Park. On his own initiative he decided to give forms to the cypresses and today we have a beautiful work visited and photographed by domestic and foreign visitors.
Mr. Evangelista was awarded the Prize of Traditional Popular Culture 2014, as a just and deserved recognition of over 50 years of hard work.)
