Siquirres is located on Route 32, which connects San José to Limón. The distance from San Jose to Siquirres is 96.6 kms.
The company that began construction of the railroad to the Caribbean, founded in 1875 the village called Mile 36, as a labor camp and storage of materials for the railroad, which eventually came to form the present city of Siquirres.
The planting of bananas in the region began in the late nineteenth century by Mr. Minor Cooper Keith. This activity was increased in the short term and during the first third of the twentieth century, for large-scale production by the United Fruit Company, established in 1899 by Mr. Keith, in association with foreign capital. The crop was affected in the 1930s due to diseases that attacked the plants and soil depletion, which prompted that company to move its production interests to the southeast Pacific of Costa Rica.
During the archbishop of Monsignor Mr. Víctor Manuel Sanabria Martínez, second archbishop of Costa Rica, in 1949, he established the parish, dedicated to St. Joseph Patron.
The school was established in 1908, during the first administration of Mr. Cleto González Víquez, which currently bears the name of Mr. Justo A. Facio.
The name of the county according to Don Carlos Gagini, in his book “The Aborigines of Costa Rica”, was mentioned in a document of 1678 as Siquerre; Indian word that in Cahita, siquiri means red. (Source: Guías Costa Rica, available on April 18, 2011).

La siembra del banano en la región se inició a finales del siglo XIX, por parte de don Minor Cooper Keith. Esta actividad se incrementó en el corto plazo y durante el primer tercio del siglo XX, por la producción a gran escala realizada por la United Fruit Company, empresa establecida en 1899 por el señor Keith, en asocio con capital extranjero. El cultivo se vió afectado en la década de los treinta del pasado siglo, debido a las enfermedades que atacaron las plantas y al agotamiento de los suelos, lo cual motivó a la mencionada empresa a trasladar sus intereses y producción al Pacífico sureste.
